- SYSLOG VERSION 2.0 _________________________________
-
- Syslog version 2.0 is finally ready to go! That's
- the good news. The bad news is that we have decided
- to offer Syslog through the retail software market.
- We decided to use the retail market because of the
- encouragement we got from the many users of Syslog
- 1.1. As 'bare bones' as it was, Syslog filled a
- definite need for many users. Syslog version 2.0
- fills that need much better than before, and uses
- much less disk space to boot!
-
-
- SYSLOG REGISTRATION ________________________________
-
- In spite of the fact that we will be distributing
- Syslog through dealers and directly to the end user,
- our registration and upgrade policy still stands for
- users of version 1.1.
-
- 1. We will honor our commitment to upgrade
- registered owners of version 1.1 at no charge.
-
- 2. We will allow unregistered Syslog version
- 1.1 users to register their copy until April
- 15, 1985 (Tax Day!). To do this, you MUST
- register your copy by mail, using the Syslog
- registration form. This form entitles you to
- receive Syslog 2.0 at the registration price.
-
- 3. New registrations will automatically
- receive the latest version of Syslog.
-
- We appreciate the support we have received, and we
- will continue to earn that support.

- NEW FEATURES _______________________________________
-
- Version 2.0 of Syslog offers many new features over
- the previous release:
-
- o 38% Reduction in Log Space
-
- o Elapsed Time for Entries
-
- o Print Selected Projects
-
- o Cumulative Time Tracking by %
-
- We believe that these features substantially improve
- the overall utility of Syslog and make any further
- manipulation of the log data unnecessary for most
- applications. Some of the specific changes to the
- program are described in more detail.
-
-
-
- The Print (/P) command has been expanded to provide
- additional reporting options. You can now select
- entries for printing by date range, entry number
- range, operator, or project.
-
- These features allow for some very detail specific
- reports. At the end of each report, a total elapsed
- time for the entries on that report are printed.
- This can be a useful feature for people who bill for
- their time spent on a job or project.
-
- All reports now feature a breakdown of business and
- non-business use of the computer. The information
- is presented by cumulative hours and percent
- distribution by usage type (a feature that is likely
- to make both you and your accountant happy).
-
- The structure of the log file has been changed
- significantly and is no longer compatible with the
- 1.x versions. If you are using an earlier version
- of Syslog, you will have to start a new log file.
- This will be an almost painless process since you
- will merely pick up where you left off from the old
- file.
-
- We considered providing a file conversion program,
- but this turns out to be highly impractical for most
- users. In order to accurately convert the file you
- would have to determine, for each entry, whether or
- not it constituted a business project. A very
- tedious task; better to start fresh, we decided.
-
- The program and data file names have been changed on
- this version to allow keeping the old and new files
- on one disk without mixing things up too much.
-
- The Erase Entry (/E) command has been removed. This
- was done to preserve the overall integrity of the
- log. Our tax advisors felt that the mere existence
- of this capability might compromise the reliability
- of the log as a tax document.
-
- In the process of adding all the goodies, we ended
- up with a program that is about the same size, but
- the data file was put on a diet. Log entries now
- use only 30 bytes of space per entry.
-
-
- THANK YOU __________________________________________
-
- We would like to thank all those folks out there who
- supported Syslog with their registrations. We have
- some even more interesting things in store for the
- near future.

- The above sample is just one of the reports you can generate
- with SYSLOG. In this sample, all log entries which contain
- the text 'tax' in the project are printed. Reports are also
- available by operator, date range, or entry number range.
